There are 2 versions of this lens, optically the same: the early version had a huge dished front while the latter (current ?) version had a petal hooded front end. Among all the 20mm M42 lenses, the MIR is always performing at the top end, surpassed only by the CZJ Flektogons.

Some sources state that the rear mounted filter is always needed, as it forms part of the optical train. This is actually only a myth; one can safely take pictures ( sharper & better, in fact) without any of the filters.

Snapshot, as usual, is best done with a wideangle & in B&W; especially when you don’t have much control over the elements within the pictures. The very nature of a 20mm or similar is that you will still got enough DOF even when you are shooting at Wide open or near Wide Open as in this shoot which is taken at 4.0 Handheld

The “big” Mir 20 is sharp for real, a bit less on the corners, overall is quite good under f:5.6,
A little bit of distorsion (not too much !), no C.A., neutral rendition, good with flare problems, and with exeptional high contrast !
